“Vanessa is not only my BFF, she is also a computer genius. She has been reading computer code since she was five. Her dad began to teach her when she was just a lil baby. She can hack into any system and turn cell phones into remote controls or turn television sets into microwaves – stuff like that!”
“She always has her laptop with her. Unlike me, she stays indoors most of the time since she has sun sensitive skin that burns easily.”
“When she’s not hacking into something or doing homework, she’s usually online writing Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan fiction.”

“Hi, my name is Jillian and I’m Surfer Girl. I’m 11 years old and I’m a super hero. When I was young, my mom told me that I come from special Hawaiian blood. Now I wear this magical amulet. My mother had it before me. Her mother had it before her, and her mother had it before her etc., etc. My mom said ‘One day that amulet will glow and you, my daughter, who had inherited the amulet will Save the World.’”

After all the hard work and five months in California, the book is finally complete. I have already sent the spreads off to several publishers. Now I have to update this blog and my web portfolio and other links. It feels good.

Each super hero needs a good origin story. I developed mine as soon as I thought of Surfer Girl. I have created it in a children’s book form because inside the graphic novel, her mother reads it to her as a child, as you will eventually see. You are actually getting a sneak peak of my graphic novel. The images are paper collage.

I know I have been a little behind on writing in this blog but it doesn’t mean I haven’t been working. I just haven’t been sure on what to post. Mainly I’ve been writing and I’m not sure how to post it. Sometimes I find it too personal to post. Or maybe its just boring. Do I scan in my handwriting? or do I retype it? I’ve been sketching some characters but I’m not sure I’ll keep them around so I don’t want to introduce them to the public. Now you can see my predicament. I’m just not ready to show my cards but once I do, it’ll be good.

Ok so I have created a new website, http://ciaracollage.wordpress.com, to post images of my paper collages. Apparently when I posted my collages on this site, some readers didn’t respond well and were confused to the connection with surfer girl. The collages you’ll see on this site don’t have a direct link to surfer girl but because I made them and they are part of my creative process by proxy they are related to surfer girl. So please check them out and let me know what you think.
